18-22 July 2016, New Jersey, USA – Marists celebrate the Pledge of Fourvière

SMSM Sisters

Representatives of the Marist Family gathered together in New Jersey from 18 to 22 July to pray and celebrate the event that led to the founding of the Society of Mary: Marist Brothers, Marist Sisters, Marist Fathers, Lay Marists and ourselves, the Marist Missionary Sisters. The founding event took place on 23 July 1816 at Fourvière (in Lyon, France), when a small group of newly ordained priests and some seminarians made a solemn promise to found a society of “Maryists” to carry her name and to do her work “for the glory of God and the honour of Mary”.

This time together in New Jersey was especially appreciated as a time to learn about each other, our common spirit and the way that each congregation has developed historically. We came to appreciate more deeply the richness of our charism, a gift we have been given so that we can respond as Mary did to the needs of God’s people in our world of today.

Presentations helped us grow in our understanding of our spiritual heritage, our spirituality and the Marian Face of the Church. Each group presented its charism and the gift that it brings to the Church. Workshops on particular topics enabled us to deepen our interest in these areas. During our times of prayer together we were united in praise of God and we celebrated our calling. Our final liturgy in honour of our Marist Founders celebrated their vision and commitment; in turn we recommitted ourselves by signing a copy of the original Pledge.
