The Junior Missionary Group in Jamaica

SMSM SistersIn 2015 Sisters Anne Quinn, Lupetea Vea and I formed a new community in Gordon Town. We are involved in the parish schools and do pastoral work in our local parish of Saint Martin de Porres.  We noticed that many young children attend Sunday Mass but that few join catechetical class after Mass.

Concerned about their spiritual growth, we decided to initiate a formation programme for a small group of these children. They themselves decided they would be called Junior Missionaries. As a result we are encouraging the children to be missionaries in their own way, both at home and at school. SMSM SistersThey participate in the liturgy by leading the singing, reading the scriptures and being ushers in the Church. They also visit people in need. In December last year, they visited a home for children with disabilities and brought them gifts for Christmas. This is our way of evangelization through our work with the children.

Our hope is that these children will grow in faith and will learn to give themselves for the service of others.
