Perpetual Profession of Sr Rabunna Bwakineti smsm
Torrential rain on Friday prevented the Sisters on the main island of Kiribati from flying to the smaller island of Marakei. Fortunately, the next day, Saturday 16th January, 2010, the clouds lifted and they were able to fly there for the perpetual profession of Sr Rabunna Bwakineti in her home parish.
The parishioners were delighted to welcome the visitors as this was the first time a perpetual profession had been held there. Bishop Paul Mea msc was the main celebrant and the liturgy was enriched by the singing, solemn procession of the Word of God, and liturgical dancing. An ancient type of chanting was used in the responsorial psalm, a symbol of how well the people of the island have preserved their culture. Just before the final blessing, Sr Rabunna was missioned to the North American Province.
Following the celebration of the Mass, there was the celebration in the traditional meeting house with many traditional dances and songs as well as some composed for the occasion. It seemed that the whole population of the island was present to join in Sr Rabunna's joy.
