On Saturday, 16 July we gathered at the Church of the Daniel Brottier sector of our parish of St Josephine Bakhita, Dakar, Senegal to celebrate the First Profession of Sister Malia Fusi Ma’afu, from Tonga.
With conviction Sr Malia pronounced her "YES" to be part of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary and to participate in God’s mission at the service of the universal Church. This "Yes" to live in the manner of Mary was pronounced in the presence of the Congregational Leader, Sr Georgeanne Marie Donovan. Sr Malia’s mother and brother came to Senegal and were very happy to discover a little of Africa and its culture.
During the ceremony, Sr Malia chose a coconut tree to represent her journey and her desire to live her call. The local choir sang and helped us give thanks for this blessed day. It was an opportunity for us all to recognise the richness of the Church by singing hymns in different languages: Wolof, French, English, and Tongan. Girls accompanied the offerings with the traditional dances, Serrer and Diola.
Malia‘s commitment is a reminder of an important event for us as Marists. Taking place just a few days before the celebration the Bicentennial of the Marist vocation, the event is more than a memory: We must give thanks to God for Marist vocations.
