The Marist Family Celebrates the Bicentenary of the Pledge of Fourvière 1816-2016

On 23 July 1816, twelve young priests of Lyon signed a pledge that can be considered the founding act of the Society of Mary. Fathers Marcellin Champagnat and Jean-Claude Colin were among the signatories.

1816 – 2016: 200 years!

The Bicentenary will be celebrated throughout the Marist world, both locally where Marists live and in Lyon where a Solemn Mass for the whole Marist Family will be celebrated at Fourvière on 23 July 2016. See: http://www.maristinter.org/

Dare to Dream, the International Marist Youth Meeting, (IGMY) will take place in Lyon, France 17-23 July 2016. Some participants will then continue onto the World Youth Day (WYD) in Poland.

On this occasion the 4 branches of the Marist Family (the Marist Sisters, the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary, the Marist Fathers and the Marist Brothers) have decided to celebrate together this experience. 

There are several reasons that bring us together to Lyons: to promote the ongoing development and integration of the young people from the 4 branches of the Marist family; the celebration of the bicentenary of the Promise of Fourvière (July 23rd, 2016); the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of the Marist Brothers (January 2nd, 2017), and the World Youth Day in Krakow, from July 26th to the 31st, 2016. 

Many young people expect already to share their joy, solidarity and dreams in different forms and different spaces, to share their experiences as young people within the Marist Family. This process opens us today to new horizons for the Marist Charism and Mission.
