Gaudete Sunday, 14th December 2014, was truly a day of rejoicing for Sr Pelenatita Petelo smsm as she made her perpetual profession during the parish Mass in the Sto. Nino Church at Maitum in the Philippines. Sr Pelenatita chose Mary’s words to the servants at the wedding feast at Cana “Do whatever He tells you” as the theme to express her desire to dedicate herself completely to God as a Marist, missionary religious. With shining eyes and a radiant smile, Sr Pelenatita professed her vows before the parish community and members of the Marist family. Regional for the Asia-Pacific region, Sr Euphrasie Mukamana smsm, received her vows on behalf of the congregation and all sang a hymn to Mary as Sister signed her vows. Three Sisters from the Bangladesh community were fortunate to join the celebration as they were in the Philippines for a joint Assembly of the Philippine and Bangladesh communities.
After Mass, everyone gathered in the Resource Center to continue the celebration. Sr Pelenatita is from Tonga and has been working in the Philippines since making her first profession in 2009. Pastoral work among the indigenous people especially the T’boli is the main focus of her ministry. This was reflected in the speeches and the entertainment that was presented. There were dances by children in the parish and by two T’boli women. However, there was delight all round when Sr Pelenatita presented a Tongan dance. People from the parish shared their joy and appreciation of Sr Pelenatita’s presence among them. Marist Brother Robert McGovern who is in charge of the Resource Center gave a brief outline of Marist history and how it led to a Sister from Tonga making her vows in the Philippines. By her perpetual profession, Sr Pelenatita reminds us that the call that urged our pioneers to leave all resounds in our hearts today.
