Perpetual profession of Sister Ruma Gomes
“Let it be done to me according to your will” was the theme chosen by Sr Ruma Gomes for her perpetual profession on 28th April 2012. The Eucharistic celebration was held in the 1677 Portugese church at Tejgaon, Dhaka Bangladesh, recalling the roots of the faith in Bangladesh. It concluded with a visit to the cemetery behind it to pray at the grave of Sr Elizabeth O’Brien smsm, the first SMSM in Bangladesh who had arrived in Bangladesh forty years ago, our SMSM roots.
The main celebrant was retired Archbishop Paulinus Costa, a friend of the congregation for many years, and he was assisted by three Xaverian Fathers and the parish priest. The ceremony was a mixture of English and Bengali with Sr Ruma pronouncing her vows in both languages. Salesian Sr Mitha played the harmonium for the Bengali hymns and the Marist Brothers, George and Vigilio, played guitars for the English hymns. Members of Sr Ruma’s family were also present. Afterwards, all those invited returned to the SMSM house to continue the celebration.
